Hydrogen Peroxide for Dog Ears: Safe or Not?

If your dog is prone to ear infections or appears to have a buildup of wax, you may be wondering if you can use hydrogen peroxide to clean your dog's ears. After all, there are over-the-counter ear drops for humans that contain peroxide. So, is it a great way to clean your dog's ears?

The short answer is that veterinarians don't agree if hydrogen peroxide is a safe and effective option for cleaning your dog's ears. Here's why.

Some veterinarians say hydrogen peroxide is fine

Many veterinarians say yes, you can use hydrogen peroxide to clean your dog's ears, but they recommend doing so under medical supervision.

That being said, if you suspect your dog may have some type of yeast or other ear infection, you should not clean the inside of the ears with hydrogen peroxide unless your veterinarian tells you to do so first.

A solution of one part hydrogen peroxide and one part water can be used to clean the ear canals with a cotton ball made for a dog with a mild infection, after veterinary approval. Never use a cotton swab or a sharp object, as this can damage the ear.

Hydrogen peroxide can kill forms of bacteria that can cause ear infections, which can alleviate your dog's ear pain.

Some veterinarians say it is not right to use

Other veterinarians are not as keen on the idea of using hydrogen peroxide to clean dogs' ears or treat ear infections. The reason experts are cautious about using it is because of its chemical action.

Hydrogen peroxide is H2O2. A bubbling sound is heard when it enters the ear. This means that it works and kills all bacteria in your dog's ear, good or bad. When it bubbles, that extra oxygen molecule is released, leaving you with H2O or water.

Water in a warm and moist place like your dog's ear is a perfect environment for any resistant bacteria not only to survive but also to thrive. This can lead to a more severe ear infection that can cause ear damage and, in severe cases, hearing loss.

Deciding whether to use hydrogen peroxide to clean your dog's ears can be a bit confusing and overwhelming, as it can have benefits but also has some dangers.

The best way to decide what to do with your dog's medical treatment is to work closely with your veterinarian to tailor a treatment specifically for your pup. There are many other products you can buy to clean your dog's ears. You should discuss this with your veterinarian.
