How To Make Homemade Milk for Puppies

Without a doubt, the best thing for a puppy is his mother's milk. It's the best way to get the nutrients and fats you need to start your puppy's development and growth. However, sometimes breast-feeding is not possible, either because the mother has died or rejected her puppies, or because she could pass on a disease to them through milk. For these cases, and provided that the possibility of finding a mother nurse for the puppies is ruled out, we can opt for a home-made recipe for puppy milk.

How To Make Homemade Milk for Puppies

The feeding of a lactating puppy on our part is somewhat complicated and survival is not guaranteed. However, if you are constant and you make the recipe well, the little ones will have a better chance of succeeding.

Homemade Puppy Milk Recipe

Have you found any orphaned dog puppies or has your dog had babies but can't or won't feed them herself? Then you'll have to do everything you can to make these puppies survive, so you'll have to look for another way of feeding, artificial lactation.

In the market there are special milks for puppies, both liquid and dehydrated, which are specially formulated as similar as possible to breast milk. This substitute is called formula milk and is ideal when dogs cannot enjoy breast-feeding. However, if you don't have this product, you need to make a homemade emergency milk recipe until you can get a commercial formula.

Homemade Milk Recipe for Puppies

Making Emergency Puppy Milk

The quantities of ingredients that we are going to give you are enough to feed a whole litter, so you will get quite a lot. If you have only one puppy or an especially small litter, divide the quantities. It is not convenient to have the milk stored for many days, it is better to go doing each day and go using fresh.

The ingredients you'll need for this homemade puppy milk recipe are:

  • 1,100 g of milk. Don't use cow's milk, as it doesn't provide the necessary nutrients and also has a concentration of lactose that puppies find hard to digest. Goat's milk is ideal, either normal or evaporated. If you can't get it, you can use LACTOSE FREE cow's milk.
  • 350 ml of mineral water.
  • 2 teaspoons of corn syrup, or if you don't have it, honey.
  • Between 800 and 900 g of natural Greek yoghurt, with at least 10% fat and no sugar or other sweeteners.
  • 4 raw egg yolks.

Elaboration:

  1. Mix the corn syrup or honey with the egg yolks until well integrated.
  2. Add the yogurt and mix again very well. Make sure there are no lumps, as they could obstruct the bottle.
  3. Without stopping stirring, add the liquid ingredients: milk and water. When everything is well mixed, it's ready!

Shih-poo puppy

Ideally, prepare this milk with a little time, at least half an hour before feeding your puppies. If you stir so much, air bubbles will be left in the mixture that dogs shouldn't ingest. With a little rest from the mixture, the bubbles will disappear and you'll be ready to drink.

Considerations for this Homemade Puppy Milk Recipe

This milk must then be kept cold, in the refrigerator, and can last a maximum of 3 days, although the fresher it is, the better. That's why it's important to reduce the quantities if you have few puppies or if they're a very small breed.

To avoid contamination from contact with other foods and the proliferation of bacteria, you should store this puppy emergency milk in clean, tightly closed plastic or glass bottles. Even better if they are made of glass. Take out the one you are going to use and remember to put the rest back in the fridge.

This milk formula is very caloric and ideal for feeding newborn puppies, as they need extra fat to start growing. It is a fairly approximate substitute for colostrum, the first breast milk they receive at birth.

It is a recipe widely used by breeders and veterinarians, so its suitability is guaranteed. However, it could happen that a dog feels bad and can not digest it. In that case, you should stop giving them this milk right away.

Remember that this homemade recipe for puppy milk is an emergency and should only be given until you can get it from a special puppy formula or if you find a wet nurse. Always count on the vet's advice and supervision to take care of a bitch before, during and after birth, and her puppies. You'll have to work hard for them to survive!

Toxic Food For Dogs - What They Should Never Eat

Many of our dear little hairy ones roam around us as we eat claiming what we put in our mouths. Sometimes, we don't think about it and give it a try, not knowing that it really can be very dangerous for them. Today we talk to you about toxic food for dogs.

Toxic Food For Dogs - What They Should Never Eat

List of toxic foods for dogs

Take good note of the following foods. These are totally forbidden for our dogs if you don't want to cause them a great harm.

Grapes and raisins

Even if you've ever tasted your hairy grapes or derivatives of them, such as raisins, and nothing happened to them, it's better not to repeat it.

The hairy ones are not tolerant to this fruit and could cause them a very serious renal insufficiency.

Dairy

The biggest problem with our dogs consuming dairy is that they are not able to digest lactose. Taking them could cause damage to your four-legged friend's gastrointestinal system.

Diarrhoea, vomiting, pain... do you think it's worth giving him dairy products? Totally discarded!

Alcohol

What may start as a bad joke to see what your dog does if he drinks alcohol, may end in death for your hairy.

Alcohol is poisonous to them because they don't tolerate it. Don't offer them any of this drink!

Chocolate

Mmmm... we love chocolate! And yes, our dogs love it too, but it's tremendously harmful to them.

Chocolate is one of the worst toxic foods for dogs. This is due to the toxin called theobromine, present in cocoa from its seed. It does us no harm, but for them it is dangerous. If taken in large quantities it can cause diarrhea, heart problems, and even death.

Apples, plums and other fruits with seeds

How wonderful the fruits are to us, and how harmful they can be to them.

Really, the problem with these fruits is their stone. To begin with, the dog swallowing this part of the fruit can cause an obstruction that prevents it from breathing and dying.

In addition, the seeds have a small amount of cyanide that dogs are unable to assimilate.

The bones

Bones must also be found in this list of toxic foods for dogs. However, their dangerousness is given by the way we offer them to our dogs.

If you want them to eat bones, give them raw and preferably fleshy or milky.

They are never uncooked! The reason: the bones that have passed through the kitchen splinter easily in the face of our dogs' bites. Can you imagine the damage these splinters can do to our pet's throat or gastrointestinal system?

Onions and garlic

The list of problems caused by these foods in our furry ones is too long, but they highlight the renal insufficiency and the anemia as a consequence of the consumption of sulfoxides.

Although it is not very common to give a piece of raw onion to our pet, it may contain leftovers from our food. Be very careful!

Liver

Another food banned for dogs if given in large quantities. Why in large quantities? The vitamin A contained in the liver is good for them in small doses, however, in large quantities can be dangerous.

Potato, avocado and tomato

Avocado can be very healthy for us, but it contains persin and this can attack your dog's digestive system.

Tomatoes and potatoes are also very dangerous because of some of the toxins they contain. If your hairy dog eats these foods he can get very sick, even go into a coma. Don't let him!

Other Toxic Foods for Dogs

But these aren't the only dangerous foods for our four-legged friends.

Caffeine is liquid poison for them; salt can cause convulsions; nuts have too much phosphorus that they can't assimilate; mushrooms contain toxins that are harmful to them; etc.

Have you taken good note of what your dog should not taste? Take care of his diet and health!

How To Keep Your Dog Clean Without Bathing it

The baths are necessary for our dogs, but, obviously, it is not possible to give them every time we want. That's why at Chien Mag we're going to give you some tips to always keep your dog clean without bathing it.

How To Keep Your Dog Clean Without Bathing it

Keep your dog clean without going through the bathtub

A good hygiene of your dog, as well as a quality food, are very important to ensure his health. And it is the responsibility of the owners to do so!

Occasionally, there may be a situation where you can't bathe your dog or your dog needs to be cleaned, but not thoroughly. Here are some tips to help your dog stay clean!

A wet towel or cloth

If your dog has soiled a part of his body, such as his paws or snout, you can take a soft towel or cloth (don't take any!) and moisten it to clean your furry coat.

If you have also brushed the area before, you will remove the dirt more easily.

Yorkshire Terrier

Specialized wet wipes

When we say specialized we mean that they are specifically for dogs. You can find them in pet shops and they are made of components that won't harm your dog's skin. Don't use human ones!

With these wipes you will be able to remove dirt, for example, from their pads, once you return from a walk in the street.

Dry shampoo for dogs

One of the most commonly used options to keep your dog clean without going through the water jet.

These special dry shampoos for our pets will make them look perfect.

To use one of them, first brush his furry. Then, moisten a soft towel or cloth with lukewarm water and apply the dry spray shampoo over it and then run it over the animal's body. Repeat as needed.

Finish the dry bath by brushing the dog again in order to remove the remains of the product.

Frenchie

Deodorants and colognes for dogs

If the problem is that your dog's smell is stronger than normal, for example, if it has been wet on a rainy day, then we recommend other options.

First, if your dog is wet, remember to dry it well with a towel and dryer so it doesn't catch a cold.

Then, apply some SPECIAL dog cologne to give it another smell. Ask your vet if it's appropriate for you, because if your pet has skin problems, it won't be the right thing to do.

Another widely used method of keeping your dog clean is to make a homemade deodorant.

This will consist of a part of apple vinegar and two parts of water that will be mixed in a spray. However, if your dog has sensitive skin or a wound, don't apply it!

Finally, remember to check areas where your dog spends a lot of time, such as his bed.

If he's left his dirt or bad smell there, it won't do any good to keep your dog clean if he's going to roll around in that place and get bad smells again. Wash his bed often so that this doesn't happen!

Dogs in Autumn - Autumn Pet Care Recommendations

Little by little we have had to say goodbye to the summer and accept that autumn has arrived. At no time should we stop paying attention to our pets, but with the change of season it is essential that we take special care. These are our recommendations to take good care of the dogs in autumn.

Dogs in Autumn - Autumn Pet Care Recommendations

The care of the dogs in autumn

Little by little the temperatures drop and we lose hours of light. Gone are the endless afternoons and walks without coats. Yes, both we and our dogs are affected by these changes and we have to take care of ourselves and our dogs.

The cold and the lowering of defenses

We are not the only ones whose defenses are lowered when the temperature drops or with sudden changes: hot at home and cold, rain and wind outside.

Dogs can also be affected and suffer from colds or other diseases that attack weak immune systems, such as leishmaniasis.

In addition, both heat and humidity are prone to external parasites, so be sure to check with your vet to ensure that your dog is fully vaccinated and well wormed!

Hair loss

The change of season always causes the fall of the fur of our pets.

Dogs in autumn and spring tend to shed their hair especially and, therefore, we must try to brush it daily to keep it healthy and grow strong.

Take the opportunity to pass the brush to your pet before entering the house at the end of your walk and thus remove the dead hair outside your home.

Do not miss the exercise

The good weather of the summer propitiated to go out for a walk or to make activities with your pet, if only it was when the sun fell or before the heat began to press.

After autumn comes the cold of winter, with which we have little desire to step on the street hairy and human, so this season is perfect to make your dog stay in shape. Take advantage!

You can do different activities such as Disc Dog or Bikejoring, or simply adapt the exercise to their race and situation, but do not miss the opportunity to enjoy the fall and train with your dog avoiding overweight.

Autumn Pet Care Recommendations

Pay attention on the walks

If you take your dog for a walk after rain, try not to let him drink water from puddles that form, as it may contain bacteria, be stagnant for a long time or be contaminated, causing digestive problems.

Our advice throughout the summer was to take fresh water for your pet with you on the walks, but this is essential in any other season of the year. You won't always have a fountain on hand and it's better to be prepared!

In addition, if the rain catches you coming home, it is better to dry it as soon as you enter. Don't let his hair dry in the air and we don't just say it so you don't get the ground wet... it's for his health! Always have a towel for him at hand.

Progressive routine changes

We already know that sudden changes in the routine and feeding of pets can cause stress and anxiety.

If in summer you had to modify the routine of walking and eating for the changes of light or for an intensive day of work, the dogs in autumn will have to change that routine again little by little.

Adapt their diet and walking times again, but don't do it all at once. For example, bring them forward about 15 minutes progressively.

Are you clear about the most important care for dogs in the autumn, so let's enjoy the season together!
